Getting started
Sign up, set up your profile, get your first book live.
How long does the sign-up take?
About 90 seconds. Email + password, or sign in with Google. We send a verification email — click the link and you're in the publisher dashboard.
Which manuscript formats can I upload?
EPUB and DOCX. We auto-generate a clean reader-ready version and a downloadable file for buyers. You can replace the file at any time without changing the product page.
How long does review take?
Free authors: typically 4–6 working days. Premium authors: under 24 hours, with a same-day track for time-sensitive launches. You'll see the status live in your dashboard.
What if my book is rejected?
We'll email you exactly what tripped review (usually metadata or formatting). You re-submit in one click — no extra wait time.
Can I publish under a pen name?
Yes. Your account email is private; your public profile uses whatever name you set. You can run multiple pen names from one account.
Publishing
Rights, exclusivity, metadata, and the catalog.
Who owns the rights to my ebook?
You do — always. Publishing on ebokio is non-exclusive. You can pull a title down at any time, sell it elsewhere, or take it offline. We just host, sell, and pay you out.
Is there an exclusivity period?
Never. The book stays yours from the day you upload it.
Can I update a book after it's live?
Yes — swap the cover, edit the description, replace the file, or change the price any time. Existing buyers can re-download the latest version for free.
Do you assign ISBNs?
We can. Free authors can bring their own ISBN or skip it entirely (ebokio assigns an internal SKU). Premium authors get a free ISBN per title, registered to their pen name.
Can I list a series?
Yes. Group titles into a series from the book editor — the storefront renders a series card with read-order, bundled pricing, and continued-reading nudges.
How is Ebokio different from Amazon KDP?
Ebokio pays more — up to 90% royalties versus KDP's 70% top tier — in GBP, with no per-megabyte delivery fee. Publishing is always non-exclusive (no KDP Select lock-in), every title gets a real human review, and AI cover + metadata tools are built in. The honest trade-off: Ebokio is a focused, curated bookstore rather than a marketplace the size of Amazon — so many authors use it as a fairer home base alongside KDP, not instead of reaching readers everywhere.
Do you offer paperback or print-on-demand?
Not yet — Ebokio is ebook-first. Your title sells as a digital edition (EPUB) with a built-in reader on web and mobile. Print-on-demand is on the roadmap. Because publishing is non-exclusive, you're free to use a separate print service alongside Ebokio in the meantime.
Can I move my book to another store later?
Any time, with no lock-in. Unpublish from your dashboard, keep your files and your rights, and sell the same book on KDP, Kobo, your own site, or anywhere else. Existing buyers keep access to what they already bought.
Royalties & payouts
How earnings are split, when you get paid, and tax handling.
How are royalties calculated?
Free authors keep 70% of net price (price after VAT and processor fees). Premium authors keep 80%, and Pro authors keep 90% with priority placement in AI Librarian results.
When do I get paid?
Each calendar month's earnings are paid automatically at the end of the month two months later (e.g. January → end of March), via PayPal, bank transfer, or wire. Minimums: bank/PayPal £30, wire £100 — balances below roll forward to the next month.
How do I withdraw earnings?
Open Dashboard → Earnings → Withdraw. Choose PayPal or SEPA bank transfer. PayPal usually clears within a day; SEPA takes 1–3 working days depending on your bank.
Do I owe tax on ebokio earnings?
Yes — we don't withhold income tax. We issue an annual statement (1099-equivalent in your country) you can hand to your tax office. EU authors: VAT is collected and remitted by us on B2C sales, so you don't have to deal with it.
Can I sell free ebooks and still earn?
Yes — free titles still earn on the Premium reader add-ons (TTS, summaries) and through our promo slots. They're also a great funnel for paid titles.
Is it really free to publish?
Yes. The Free plan has no upfront cost, no per-book fee, and no card required — you keep 70% of every sale and can publish up to 30 books. You only pay if you choose Premium (£13.99/mo) or Pro (£19.99/mo) for higher royalties (80% / 90%) and the AI tools.
How much do I actually earn per sale?
You keep your tier's share of the net price (the sale price after payment-processing fees). As a rough guide, on a £9.99 ebook you'd keep about £6.30 on Free (70%), £7.20 on Premium (80%), and £8.10 on Pro (90%). The publish wizard shows your exact royalty before you go live.
AI tools
Covers, metadata help, the Librarian — and what we don't do.
Who owns the AI-generated cover?
You do. You own the output of every AI generation you trigger inside ebokio — same as any traditional design contractor's work-for-hire. We don't license your cover to anyone else, and we don't train models on it.
How many AI covers can I generate?
Free plan: 10 generations per month. Premium: 70 per month. Pro: 100 per month. Variations per click scale with your plan (Free 1, Premium up to 2, Pro up to 4), and each variation counts as one generation. AI metadata autofill runs on the same monthly model: 10 / 80 / 100 fills per month.
Can I use a reference image to guide the AI?
Yes — drop a reference photo or sketch into the Cover Studio. The model uses it as composition / style cues. Reference images must be your own (or a license you can prove); we screen for clear copyright violations.
What is AI Librarian, and do I have to opt in?
AI Librarian is the recommendation engine across ebokio.com. Every book is indexed automatically. Premium titles get priority weighting in cold-start suggestions. Opt-out is one toggle in Settings.
Do you train AI on my book?
No. Manuscripts are NEVER used to train any model — ours or a third party's. The AI Librarian uses lightweight metadata embeddings (title, blurb, categories) only.
An AI generation looked weird — am I still charged?
If a generation fails for a provider reason (timeout, blocked prompt, server error), it doesn't count against quota and you aren't billed. Only successful generations consume credit.
Can I publish an AI-written book?
AI-assisted writing is allowed, as long as you hold the rights to what you publish and follow our content policy (including any required disclosure). Ebokio's own AI tools — covers, metadata, the co-pilot — are optional aids; the finished book you sell is your work and your responsibility. We never train models on your manuscript.
